Linkage and Connectivity

TRANSPORT AND CONNECTIVITY

Bengaluru city is known for an array of modes of transport available to ease the inter-city as well as intra-city commuting. The city is connected to Mysore, Hassan, and Tumkur in its immediate vicinity and also to Chennai, Mumbai, and Kerala state through major roads, railway, and airways.


AIRWAYS


Bengaluru is recognized and well-connected to all the major destinations globally, served by Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) since May 2008, which is also known by the name Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The airport can be reached via an efficient and inexpensive mode of locally dedicated BMTC airport buses (BMTC Vayu Vajra).

 

RAILWAYS


Bengaluru city is part of Indian Railways under the South Western Railway Zone. The city has three main stations, i.e., Bengaluru City Railway Station, Bengaluru Cantonment Station and Yeshwanthpur Railway Station.


 

BUS


Bengaluru city has an extensive network of roads and bus connectivity, making it highly accessible. Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) forms the major primary mode of transport, with Majestic Bus Station, K.R.Market and Satellite Bus Station functioning as the major bus terminals.
Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), serves the inter-city commute to various parts of Karnataka as well as the neighboring states.


 

METRO


In 2008, Bengaluru conceived the idea of a rapid transit mode of transport, which is known as Namma Metro, under Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and is operational since 2011. Currently, there are two functional lines – purple, running east-west and green, running north-south, which collectively covers 42.3km. Additionally, yellow, red and blue lines will be constructed, expanding the connectivity to the suburbs as well as the city airport.


 

PBS – PUBLIC BICYCLE SHARING SYSTEM


The BBMP has initiated PBS at various hotspots of the city, especially the metro stations, aiming at the sustainable methods of commuting. An extensive range of privately run, app-based cycles, auto-rickshaws, taxis are also available.
